I got into design just before computers took over the industry. I was forced to spec all the type in my projects while interning at a design firm. Jesus it sucked so much. I was like "you know we could do this much more easily in a Macintosh" and my art director said NO!

I have to admit that studying the type specimens in the sample books (setting type was expensive -- like thousands of dollars for booklets -- so you had to be careful when making a selection) taught me a lot about subtle differences between type, texture, etc.

When I was in high school I spent the day at an interactive firm that I really admired, their advice to me was: "Learn type as well as you can. Know it inside and out."
