google vs. social networks

I have been thinking .. word of mouth is the new google ...
of course google is not going away ... but social networks are definitely taking a chunk out of the search engine market. Instead of going to search engines and typing what you are looking for .. it seems more and more people get on social networks/forums and ask your friends ..

I use qbn and google for general topics .. and then have a zillion other ones for specific interests.. phpfreaks, drawger, etc

I was thinking about this the other day. One of the characteristics of the web right now is that it doesn't have a universal format for storing information. Instead it's kind of a messy pile of a lot of different opinions/ data etc. The upside is that you can get a lot of perspectives and alternate viewpoints. The downside is that information is not as efficient as it could be if there was a universal standard.

I don't think the social networks are taking chunks out of google searches but websites like QBN specialize in a specific subject. Which could hurt google slightly, however how do people find these sites? Through google---->With word of mouth.
The only thing facebook specializes in is advertising, same with myspace and the others.So no social sites are not hurting google but sites specializing in a certain topic could but not enough to make a difference......However what do we all do if we cant find the answer........Go to google.

I find I tend to use social networking based sites for opinions and insight on a particular subject. And use google for hunting down info. Now, whether that tips the balance away from google I don't know.

true google is the old stand by .. but 3 years ago I would google everything .. now I only go to google as a last resort .. I usually ask my friends via social networks, chats, or these type of sites ... and if more and more people go about finding content this way .. less people are seeing ads on google .. which means its not as effective for advertisers

When the web was young and two-way, it was a human-powered resource, with meatspace dictating the consensus along domain-specific grounds. As the size of the audience increased exponentially it became less composed, more disparate and too large for individuals to maintain. The clear path was toward the automated collection, agglomeration and Googlisation of resource, and thus the virtual dictated the meat.
Now that the meat is knee deep in web2.0 and mightily chowing down on the wet dream of web3.0 and all her interactive lasciviousness - two-way. three-way, multi-soaked orgies of collaboration - we'll once again come to rely on the meat, but this time, meat on virtual, intertwined like some great neural-enhanced cyborg knowledge fuck.

It just occurred to me reading these responses that QBN is an example of crowdsourcing. Huh.
