First off, what do all of you think of those flash ads that pop-up over the content of a page?
Secondly, does anyone have a link to articles about these? Particularly what average folks think of them.

Not quite the same thing, but we do a number of expandable ads that are served up by Yahoo. They are considered "polite," since they are user initiated, but I understand they are really quite successful.

Je suis an average folk and, assuming they don't fill the entire screen, take ages to download with fucking FMV or (and this is the biggie) hide the 'Close X' away, I accept them as justifiable form of advertising.
When they've clearly hogged my bandwidth, have too sensitive a roll-over condition on whatever banner spawned them, fill up the screen and make every effort to hide the X away so I'm forced to watch them, I get really rather angry.
- Though, I breathe anger, so this isn't really a novel feeling.Nairn

As a user I think they are super annoying.
As a designer I think some of them, when done right, can be pretty sweet.

they always annoy, also can make me leave the page if cannot be instantly switched off.
Some of them display the close button at the end of the sequence only. Some trick you to click while trying to close them. These ensure I leave the page.

if not, well I still hate you.

For flash people like me, it downgrades the game again. I really looks like a flashy ad-on. Making me wanna fall into total CSS-dom. but it could be a slick selling point.

Like all advertising you see anywhere - if it's entertaining, you don't mind.
Anything that's obvious shinannegans and pushy is not entertaining.
I love advertising, and do not believe that it fuelled the spiral of baseless credit that has fucked us all so delightfully, then disgorged its foul essence on our screaming faces.Woah..

Any ad is annoying. Unless it's funny and on the television or on a billboard, so I won't have to click it to the content I actually want.

Hate them, makes for a bad experience.

I agree with most everyone here. They are annoying, ruin the experience of landing on the page you nav'd to, and generally cheapen the product. It may as well be a dancing used car salesman in a plaid suit jumping all over the screen.
Anyone know of any reading about this? I am trying to pitch against doing these

Fucking hate them!

all the ones we make have fairly strict guidlines, there is no point in annoying the fuck out of your target audience.
they have to polite load (let the web page that hosts them load first)
expanstion has to be user initiated.
the contract automatically on roll off (no hidden x)
and the sound has to be user initiated.
