Does anybody know of such a thing as this?
A portable, battery operated, handheld fourtrack recording studio. Digital not tape-based, with a decent built-in mic / stereo mic.
I'm not looking for a feature heavy item, I just want to be able to take decent recordings and overlay four individual channels with maybe a bit of volume control per channel.
I know I can google this and have (and will again), but I just wondered if anyone out there had such a thing and could recommend model to look for.

^ Hah, how funny, that's exactly the one I just decided I should go for. Is the recording good and clear? Is there any self-noise pick-up with this?

the zoom mics are awesome live mics, you can play with the sensitivity too. noise is virtually zero.

Cool. Off to the shops right now!!! Thanks for info indian_pole... I was pretty much going for the H4 but just wanted to see if anyone said anything good or bad about it or any others. Nice one.

I can also recommend the Zoom H4. Not studio quality, but definitely decent - at an affordable price.

no probs... i found the online price much cheaper than the shops too... you have to shop around a bit, i think i got mine new off ebay.

I think there's also a new one that connects a mic to your ipod that's supposedly good
