Are wee laptops like these netbooks alright for running the likes of ableton live?
http://shop.lenovo.co.uk/apps/pr…
I had ableton live running on an xp laptop with 1gig ram with 1.6 dual processor and it was fine - but struggles when LOTS of synths are running at the same time.
These wee ones dont have the dual processor.
Was thinking that one of these would be great for simplifying tunes down for live performances so would only have to take a wee laptop like this on the road with a controller for tweaking on the fly.
Anyone tried to use one of these netbook kind of things running XP to do anything challenging

i was thinking the same thing....for a live performance i think it'd be good as long as you were just doing audio playback and maybe a minimal effect or two.

I *suspect* not - if only because they don't tend to have a load of RAM and fast HD access. Aside from anything, they work best under Linux, from what I've read - is Ableton available on that platform?
Wer, fuckit - netbooks are teh sexxy - buy one and try it out (says the hypocrite who enjoys railing at other people's wasteful consumer habits...)
- for audio a stripped XP installation will be blazing on those netbookssublocked
- ooi, how does one 'strip an XP' installation. I think I'df like to do that on every machine I have!Nairn

@naim the specs on those laptops murder old machines i used to produce on. i made tracks on 700mhz p3's and they worked fine for just arranging audio. those netbooks should be able to handle playback just fine.
only thing i'd worry about is the screen size.

cheers sunblocked.
these wee notebooks have had me intreagued for ages.
it'd mean for live performance of tunes (mostly all audio with a couple of channels left for tweaking) youd only need this wee machine.they are cheap too, so if it gets stolen or damaged then youve only lost a few hundred quid and not your main laptop with all your work and music etc on it.
wonder if i could go to a specialist shop (where the staff KNOW about computers rather than just a high street chain) and ask them if I could buy it on the promise that they reckon it should run ableton no probs and if it doesnt i could return it :)
