Keeps bloody crashing, tashed my prefs, disabled all non system fonts, reinstalled, even tried downloading and running the CS4 demo.

Did you try to clean up all your system fonts too? Not just turn em off but clear out the font cache and clean up the folder?

Perhaps start up with all extensions off and see if it crashes. This is the long way to do it, basically you start turning on extensions until it crases then you've found your conflict.
I've never done this by the way, but its what apple always suggest to do when something funky like this happens.

Sound like you have a font conflict. It's rear for indesign to crash like this.
