you can make a grid out of a bunch of black drinking straws and a regular off camera flash.

The 101 lessons here are good too:

Thanks very much for the help, well it turns out some cunts have already done exactly what I want to do :(
Funeral for a friend.
http://www.7digital.com/artists/…I was going to do this almost exactly for another bands album cover but in the hands would be pine cones. Now I cannot do it as it's exactly the same. I might change it so the hands are dropping cones but I'm pretty annoyed I cannae do it. I will have to change it up a bit :( but I had my heart set on the hands pretty much exactly like the cover in the funeral for a friend shot.

Sorry to interrupt, but it feels like you're describing a shot we've all seen. Am I right?

yes, make sure you have some dark sleeves also, if you can find a ray of sunshine the light will be less red... the rest you can probably photoshop.....

I'd like to see a little of the colour in the sleeves I have an olive green jacket which has perfect cuffs for what I want.

Look into snoots and grids. They are light modifiers that help you control the degree of spread from a light source. You can use one or the other, or both combined to create light spots of different sizes.
Meter for your brightest highlights. If you're using an in camera meter use spot or center weighted average for your metering mode.
