Does anyone know of any sites built in Joomla that are creative? I mean well designed and / or using the cms in a creative way (not just re-skinning boxes and leaving them in the same place).

To be honest I have never seen a well designed creative site done with Joomla, I am sure there are some out there!
The one I visit a lot is http://www.juxtapoz.com/

I worked with a Joomla developer before and he used to download a template (they all looked the same) and the changed the graphics and he was very impressed with that until I told him that was well shite!
I have to say Drupal is a very good option but it's a bitch to template (for me anyways) and sometimes I felt that I did not have full control over my template and the code that came from Drupal.
Do you have to use Joomla?

No, just trying to find a CMS that I can start to use.
Needs to:
Have good features that cover off what the majority of clients need / want.
Be flexible so I can design what I want (within reason) and be quick to implement.
Joomla seems to have a lot of plug-ins / add on functionality, but I've heard it's "cobbled together".

If you filter "CMS" there are tons of reviews on most of the CMS out there and from a designers point of view.
I personally use http://www.modxcms.com/ great template system some good mods and a great support forum. It's very very easy to learn and you can create any design you like and then just create custom fields and add that in your design. You work with simple tags and not with php code.
As I said there are tons of option but if you filter and read a bit about it I am sure you can find a CMS that's right for you.
Good luck!
- Yeah, I read about a few different ones on here. Expression Engine seemed to have a few supporters as well.calculator
- yes EE is very good however you need to buy a license per install :( $$$$ but very goodOhYeah
- The core version is free and will suit most needs..Lillebo
- yes true but if you want to have member login, gallery ect you need to get pro.OhYeah

no CMS should govern the design, anything is possible, Joomla 1.5 is better than previous versions because it has template overrides.
I always make this clear with clients, the CMS doesn't drive the design.

No, but a CMS can create limitations and make it harder to implement a design
- But it shouldn't. I think that's the point lee was making.404NotFound

I've not found that, it can take longer to implement some design ideas, but thats the same with static sites.
I approach it like this:
Build the site statically, then 'plug' the CMS into the design. With joomla for instance, this is very easy to do, once you know the Joomla 'tags' to put in the template.

Make sure you use Joomla 1.5 by the way, and read up on template overrides.
Most CMS' are good these days, modX has always been nice and clean, although 3rd party development isn't as active as say Joomla or Drupal.

Just found this site that makes templates:
Don't like the visual styles, but they show the creative flexibility I think.
This is pretty nice:
