if your source originates in HD, there are advantages to
uploading a 1280x720 video as the videos can be played in 720p by
using a URL switch of &fmt=22. But the uploaded file needs to be at
least 1280x720 using pretty high bitrates.

a current release of the Flash player to benefit)

1280 by 720 will scale down to fit the youtube NEW video player format perfectly at 640 by 360.
