doing a smallish notebook with fluorescent lines and wondering what line size i can get away with, i need to balance the quality of the line (print wise) with the fact that they need to be unobtrusive, cheers

What size is the book? A5? If so I would use a 0.25pt line. You don't want to go to much small as you might have visibility and print registration issues. It all depends on how delicate you want the lines.

i just asked this question to a very high end offset print-house, and they said they prefer .375

Most printers will recommend thicker than you think. I would normally for offset printing go with 0.25pt (definitely no thinner). Are you getting proofs done? I would recommend setting up a test sheet with various weight from 0.25pt up to 0.65pt and take it from there. If not, play it a little safe and go for 0.325pt, this will still be a fine line.

I do annual reports and use lines in every project, I always go with 0.3pt, thin enough to look delicate but thick enough to hold the form.
