Need your advice please.
I'll make it quick.
How do I proceed?
Client and I agree to 15 hours for 2 concepts, deadline looming.
Worked over 15 hours just on the first concept (my fault, fell in the zone), sent it off and started the second and worked till 5am to get it going.
Receive feedback from the first concept saying it's not really what they're looking for, needs to be simpler. So I take this feedback and I'm going to simplify the second concept, plus I'm still over the hours.Does the fact that the client feels I have missed the brief mean that I haven't completed a concept for them yet?
or does it mean that I can use the feedback from the first concept and apply it in the second, and then thats it, 2 concepts done! (except for 2hr agreed revisions)Even though the client didn't like the first one, it doesnt take away from the fact it's still a concept, and counts towards the 2 we agreed I'd do. Is that right?
It just leaves a bad taste in my mouth if I left them with something they didn't like/want, and they've paid for it.
Plus the client is a good one.
Just need to air my thoughts, hope you can help.
Cheers

Change your process up a bit and show the two concepts in rougher form earlier, gather feedback and then make the final concept all good and cleaned up.

In addition, if you ended up leading yourself down the garden path and wasting some time, remember that there is a distinction between billable and non-billable hours.

cope the extra time yourself and just get the job done as quick as you can. if the client is a possible long-term one then keep him happy. for now.

What's he do now, Mr. "Great Advice for Next Time"?

You have only sent one concept so they would expect two completely different concepts as your contract, send them the second one as it is and then wait for their feedback, you already know that they want you to simplify things so bear that in mind when they give you feedback on the second one. You said two concepts for 15 hours worth of work you have to give them two concepts, thats what you guys agreed on.

"needs to be simpler" does not translate into "missed the brief." Definitely provide a second direction and talk about what you'll do to move forward. For the next round of work, don't underestimate how long it will take.

@ boobs... it was his/her mistake and will need to eat the extra time spent. At this point if you want to keep the client, you'd need to stick to the contract and complete it.

- not always, let them know you're going over the hrs, your proposal should've stated it was an "estimate" in the first placedoesnotexist

you should be letting them know a few hrs before that you're going over the hrs and for them to advise as to what should happen.
really, if you think the brief wasn't good enough to get a good first found out of - you should've let them know that BEFORE you did all the work.
good luck to you.
- whole 'nother story if you missed the brief. it's your job to GET the brief.doesnotexist
