Isn't design without purpose called 'art'?

There has got to be a way to monetize design outside of having a client.

Being an interactive designer, I suppose one version would be to design a site that I own that makes money.

Some people join VSO and get dropped in some remote corner fo the world with minimal resources and they have to work out how to harness the environment around them to design a footbridge, a well a damn or whatever. That would probably qualify as design without a client.

If you worked 3 hours a night after work, and 10 hours a day on weekends, you could do your own stuff for almost 40 hours a week. Of course, you wouldn't necessarily have a life at that point.
