With this podcasting malarky, could someone record a dj mix then sell it through itunes as a podcast and make money on it?
Or would you have to pay for a broadcasting license or whatever?
I'm asking because i'm finishing off an album of tunes and some of my songs contain samples so I wouldnt be able to sell them as part of an album, but i thought maybe it could be sold as part of a podcast - you dig? ;)
I saw "A State Of Trance Official Podcast" by Armin Van Buuren and it looks like his podcasts are basically his tunes or mini half hour mixes.
Anyone got any light to shed on the matter of podcasternating?

if it's got anything other than your stuff on it then you need a license to distribute it. That includes uncleared samples...

cheers, thats what i though.
if they did allow folk to post up mixes , as well as breaching other peoples copyright, itunes would be swamped with shit mixes from every DJ and his dog.

There are quite a few (I think) podcasts by DJ's on there, but there aren't very popular so don't show up unless you know what name to search for... and because they aren't very popular... it's a vicious circle. The ones I have listened to have been average at best.
You won't be able to sell them because as r3mote said, it's not your work and you'll need to clear each tune. Never gonna happen.
Funky House London Style is one of the most popular, but I don't know the people behind it.
Most DJ's, whilst being able to spin probably aren't going to have the geek-ability to run their own podcasts so their is definitely a market for it, but going back to your original question - you'll never be able to sell them.

you can't (legally) give them away for free either... it's all quite complex this licensing bizniss. I'm involved with an internet radio station and though we have licensing for broadcasting we're not allowed to do podcasts or archive shows for DL...

Having said all that I've just noticed that you can subscribe to one of my mates podcasts through iTunes and that's got all sorts of stuff on it with no licensing whatsoever, so you might be able to get away with it!
While we're talking podcasts - if you're into all things Stones Throw they do an excellent podcast that's always worth a listen.
