Right, got a dilemma, a friend of a friend is doing a Masters degree in something Construction related. Part of this requires him to write up a business plan and 'brand' a company. He's asked me to design a logo for him, and I've agreed. I was going to do it for free, but then I thought, f*ck it, I'm not rolling in money and this is my job god damn it, so I asked him what his budget was. He came back with £100. Now if it were an up and running business, I'd tell him to go suck an exhaust pipe of a heavy goods vehicle, but seeing as it's just for his coursework I'm having a dilemma.
What would Jesus do?

pick one from windows clip-art and give it a web 2.0 look.
..et voilà!
- ian0
Jesus would turn that clip art into an award winning brand with a wave of his magic wand.
You on the other hand could just do something very simple in a very short space of time, let your friend know that whatever you create is the final logo and that its not something you normally do for a proper paying client then go have a few beers.
Or
Tell him to fuck right off cos this is what you do for a living and you don't care if he passes his masters or not. The massive cunt.

If you do it for £100, you'll probably end up with more work then you expected and curse yourself for agreeing. If you don't, you miss out on a £100.
I guess its also about how much fun you think you can have doing it and how much you care about your friends friend.

do it because he is a friend. surely you're a good enough designer to be able to do something good and in a short period of time, it aint no sistine chapel.
plus you could get all marlon brando and let him know it's a favour and should the time when you need a favour he'll be ready to offer his services. whenever. whatever.
- +1 you're gonna need some construction work someday, everybody does.section_014

Oh wait, I didn't read the initial post thoroughly. Its for a friend of a friend eh? I'd be erring on the side of option 2 in my original post.
or perhaps outsource it to india for £25 and use the remaining £75 to go for a few beers.

it's for a university assignment yeah? for fucks sake, rip one out of your design books and move on. get a carton of piss out of him or something. considering most of the people at his uni will probably do their own in powerpoint i think the bar may be set lower than usual.

You're right, as long as he know's it's a favour then the £100 is just him showing some appreciation. Plus, if he ever does get this company up and running then he's likely to come to me for some proper work. I can knock up a spanking logo in 5 minutes, charge him £100, thats £1200 an hour... Mum, I've finally made it.

Still dabbling?..
ready..steady.. autokern init !!!

Just do it.
Couple of hours work? £100.
Not a real client - easy money.

In these tough times I have started seeing this sort of thing happening alot. People try to lower your rates. Just don't agree to it. It doesn't help you, or the next guy or that guy's friends. Designers need to educate clients it costs money to do this stuff, it costs times, and frankly your services are in demand don't give the goods away for cheap unless you feel like it's worth that much.
But that being said I been in your shoes more than once in the past 3 months and I said no. Good luck.
- its_only_me0
Yeah just do it but dont let him arse you around.
one logo...with no changes and he can take it or leave it.
- penelopes0

- brandelec0
easy money mayn, i agree with most people here. uni project, 1 design, no changes

He's a mate, I would do it for free.
- eating_tv0
Jesus would do it for free, that's why they crucified the sucker because he was undercutting all business. It's a free market nowadays though.
- Jimbo820
He's a mate of a mate, gonna do it, but charge him the 100, mainly for my time. And do something I want to do, then I might actually be happy with the outcome.
Cheers all

Ask him for a "friend deal" on a house in exchange
- chossy0
Do a couple of hours of good work on it, £100 pounds is worth a couple of hours worth of work.
