Hotels in Florence, Italy?

I was just in Paris and missed out on staying at a well designed place with cheap rates. I'm onto Italy next and if I stay in another overpriced shoebox, I'll snap.
Anyone got any recommendations? I'll be in Florence, and possibly Milan each for a few days.

stayed here twice, we really like the place... close to the train station and close to the city center, more throwback italian rustic, nothing design-y... but solid value, clean rooms and nice bathrooms.

Everytime I go to Firenze I sleep here:

in florence, everything is close to each other, the city is tiny!!!
