I have been freelancing for around a year in NYC and the longest I have not had work was maybe 3 weeks; that was around Christmas time. Freelance is the way to go right now and I started with some recruiters and worked my way from there. I've used Creative Circle and 24/7. If your book is good you shouldn't have problems finding work. Best of luck.

i've been freelancing for 5 yrs here now, and id say all those recruiters suck balls. cc, aquent, all of them. you get shit pay too.
if you're good, find a creative talent search. they pay well and know what's up.
that being said, once you land one gig, word of mouth and your performance does the rest.
