Wasn't this decided on in, say, I dunno, 2006?

google don't use tag clouds anymore. they omit them in fact. so the SEO feature that everyone talks about has become obsolete. where google goes, everyone else follows.

I have to build an app soon using them :)

I created a simple gradiated solution, but it's not going well. 4 column smaller type, the more recent they are the darker they are. Client does not really like it. They like how tag clouds look.

they are pretty cool tools if they are used as links, so that if you select a word in the cloud a list is shown with all the articles that use that word. helps users find articles of interest.
we've used it here: http://www.purefishing.com.au/ar… and as the articles grow will become quite useful i think.

It's web navigation for limp-wristed sissies...
"Clouds..oh look at the pretty clouds..."
Fuck clouds. we want lists. Regimented, clear, horizontal or vertical fucking lists. Know where you are, where you are going. Tag clouds? It's web navigation for Jam Band fans...

"Over the last years many sites used the technique, because they wanted to look “smashy”, although they really weren’t."
Exactly.
- not sure if 'smashy' is a verb, adverb or noun? sounds like an offspring track title.airey

I think they just look like "hey, I'm a knitting fan, and I have a blog about knitting, crocheting and sewing, I tag all my stupid posts on my stupid website because I want people to see how ghastly my tastes are. I know! I could display all my popular tags in one of those funky tag clouds! that will REALLY speak to my blogs readership! YAY! I can't wait to blog about this and my new Steve Urkle wall hanging I was commissioned to do!!!"

i designed a site for dell a while back where the central design element was the tag cloud. and the terms were ranked from positive(green) neutral (taupe) and negative (red). it was only up for about 7 months and recently pulled when dell redesigned their 'community'. during the time it was up most all the tags were negative. but props to dell for putting themselves out there for the criticism. the only super positive tag was NAS, which stood for network area storage, but we used it to give props to the rapper.. was pretty funny.
