Are you talking about pantone? If so photoshop isn't set up to look at colors that way it will break it down to CMYK, RGB etc...
Does photoshop say "colour settings" instead of "color settings" in england?

no not pantone, just cmyk and rgb.
is it possible to get photoshop to tell me how many colours are in my image?
in england photoshop says "color settings"

how many colors? only if you're creating art using spot color channels. not cmyk or rgb.

I click on the unicorn icon. It tells you how many colors are in your image rainbow.

ah right ok. just wanted to know overall total colours of the whole file.

You could go to Image>Mode>Indexed Color . . . and choose exact to see how many colors you have. This won't work on overly complicated images though. Not sure what the threshold is. But the key is that photoshop doesn't work in inks like illy does.

it's written in the document title next to the image name, just count the letters.

The closest thing I can think to this end is to analyse the Histogram, but ... meh, not really.
More to the point - 'why?'

depending on the mode, there are 3 or 4 - RGB and CMYK
come on now

depends on the image compression or filetype you are using, provided you mean actual color values in the image and not separations or channels.
