what's the best way to ensure a long battery life? I've been running the battery down to 80% then plugging it in, then charging it up and doing the same. Should I run the battery down to zero? Does it matter?

this is on a mbp

You could keep your Mac questions in your original thread :P

because this isn't really a mac question. more of a laptop question.

LIthium-Ion batteries don't have the priming or 'charge memory' like Nickel-Cadmium does, so you don't have to worry about that draining fully issue etc. However, Lithium-Ion have a set number of optimal charge cycles, typically 400-500. So if you charge it sooner than needed, you're consuming cycles and potentially shortening the life a little.

thanks etm. I'll try to run it down

so that's why my MBP battery doesn't last for sh!t anymore? Argh.

actually I'll try not to unplug it

Keeping it plugged in too long and not letting it cycle at all can screw the battery too, in time. I don't know why laptop manufacturers don't have a bypass that lets the laptop run plugged in with the battery not installed.

actually, it does run with no battery if its plugged.
at least mac laptops.I tried it on the the 1st powerbook g4, and all the way to the previous MBP, I haven't tested on the new ones with the mirror screen

If you keep it plugged in, unplug it and let the battery discharge say once every week.
