Any of you guys do band posters as freelance work? I mostly do them for my band only, but got a request to do one for a band in California who saw my portfolio and posters.
For an unsigned band, would it be customary to give them a price, or let them offer whatever they can pay? I'm probably not too into their music based on their influences, but thought of a great concept, and, frankly, the exposure would be nice.
Thoughts?

i've done a lot of work for bands, they never want to pay what you're worth. if they have management and promotions yea go ahead and give them a price. if they are truly independent and working totally on their own let them give you a price, if you're feeling charitable then hook it up.
some bands have dr. daddy's and can pay a lot. some bands have more heart than cash flow. it's up to you to decide how and if you'll work with them.

you supplying a digital file? I usually do these for free or $50 - $100.

Let them offer whatever they can pay.... or barter for cash and merch or some kind of trade. Indie musicians don't have money. Do it because you like the band.
Oh, and signed bands don't have money either.
- the do for merch and promo my friend. that's what the labels actually pay for. small or big.anxiousarms
- Indie labels don't usually pay or merch, that's still left to the band. They DO often take a percentage of merch sales though.p-mac

I have a friend who does lots of band/show posters, and he usually gets peanuts for them. He does it more for the fun of it all, too, and will take whatever they can give him.
Probably a better place to ask would be http://www.gigposters.com , but i'm sure they'll give you 6,000 opinions on the matter as well.

I would do it, if someone asked me, for 50euros orso, for small bandies

Thanks for the tips. Being in an unsigned band myself, yeah, I know that band's don't have much money for this stuff.
The concept I have in mind could really be something they might reuse, so I might just see what they'd offer and do it no matter what.
- if they are good, ask free entrance to concerts, and free cddigdre

tell them you will be their manager and do all their design. then, get some of your older friends who are balding to buy fake ponytails. tell em to attach dem ponytails while wearing a t-shirt and a sports jacket.
at their next "big show" fill the place with your fake a&r tool bags!
i think you know where this is going...

I did show posters for ages, and still do them from time to time. Unless you are a tour poster that they are going to send to promoters to use, and silkscreen for themselves to sell, you'll most likely get peanuts.
They are fun at times, (I'm rather sick of them) and are a good change from corporate work. That said, I'll do a one off for $100. So yeah, peanuts.
Some old work.
