Photoshop GIFs / PNG8s

So this may make me sound a little odd, but I have this question thats been bugging me for about 2 years now.
I remember back in the day (I'm talking Photoshop 5 back in the day), exporting transparent png8's or gifs was a simple task. No issues with jagged edges or mattes and dithers. Is it just me or did Photoshop (then), perform this task better than Photoshop (now)?
My problem with this is that it arises weekly as I work for a Mobile Entertainment firm, where unfortunately.... mobile phones require png8 or gif images. Even after exporting 20 different version using combinations of settings, I still can't seem to get a GIF or PNG8 to export without looking horrible.
Anyone have any ideas (other than the usual smart ass comments.. haha)?

use png32
- Unfortunately, American Based Handset Models wont support PNG32 across the board.TheTofuFactory
- that's pretty weakLlyod
- tell me about it. SoftBank in Japan just released a new phone with 1024 x 480 res (thats more than 5 times the resolution of the average US based handset) and it supports almost any video / audio format.TheTofuFactory

did you use a tube monitor (then) and a tft screen (now)?
- howd you guess! haha. No but really, I still think there was a difference in the exports.TheTofuFactory

Is your icon always on the same color? If so specify the transparency matte to that color.
- unfortunately no its not. The icon can range from screen to screen but the main screen already sits as a Gradiented dark black to saturated blue color. Thats really where the matte settings aren't helping me.TheTofuFactory
- I use a medium grey in those instances.ninjasavant
- Thanks for that tip. I'll see what this pulls out on the handset. It may be good enough to get it by without noticing since handsets tend to make things look better on screen.TheTofuFactory

Does anyone know if it's accurate in the myth that Fireworks can export PNG images better than Photoshop? Is this maybe a solution?
