I know there's a way to have a floor object accept shadows, but not show in a render, so you only see the shadow. Any idea how that's done?

The answer was to do a multi pass render with shadows as an alpha channel. Then use that alpha channel to fill with black into a new transparent layer.

i don't use c4d but there's usually always an option to render just shadows for an object in 3d apps

dunno for c4d, but in max there's a standard matte material which will render transparent, except for the shadows it receives.
