why wouldn't you use AE for editing? Can't you treat movie clips the same you would in Premiere?

Hey, or you could lay out that annual report in PhotoShop.
I mean you could, but why use a screwdriver for hammering nails?

OK, so let’s look at your questions;
“why wouldn't you use AE for editing?”
Because it’s primary function is for digital compositing. Final Cut Pro or Premiere are dedicated editing apps.
“Can't you treat movie clips the same you would in Premiere?”
You can, but not quite as efficiently. If you have no other way to edit video, then do it in AE, discover the pitfalls for yourself and decide if the investment in a dedicated editor is worth your while.
I believe you can also do some compositing in FCP, but that’s a whole ’nother thread.
Hope this is more helpful.

one key reason:
"...in After Effects, each individual media object (video clip, audio clip, still image, etc.) occupies its own track; in contrast, NLEs use a system where individual media objects can occupy the same track as long as they do not overlap in time. This track-oriented system is more suited for editing and can keep project files much more concise."

what's an NLE?

can't I just render and flatten out clips out and piece them together in AE?
- joehamilton0
sure you can... it's just not the best tool for the job.

I disagree. I believe that AE can do EVERY SINGLE thing Premiere and Final Cut can do and better, with more options and at least as efficiently. You can select a whole bunch of layers and trim them all in one move. You can also use expressions to speed up the work.
- go nuts then my friend. it couldn't be that you simply don't know FCP well enough to make that call.airey
