depends on your budget

are you looking just to play music, or as a home theatre system too?

hmmm, $500 budget?

I need one to. Any recommendations

I don't have any recommendations, but I'm pretty sure you can get a lower-mid level all inclusive system for $500.

PSB speakers make quite good inexpensive speakers.

NAD makes a good budget integrated amp.

NAD, agreed

Hit up Craigslist. There's lots of people unloading higher end stereos and home theater systems.

rotel makes some good entry level theatre integrated amps. maybe some dynaudio speakers.

cheapest stereo receiver you can buy (best buy/circuit city is ok), entry level b&w bookshelf speakers. polk audio, psb are also good. do not buy any speakers you can't listen to (e.g. ebay). i'd hit up some local audio stores to listen first - stereo system quality is very subjective.
do not buy speakers from best buy/a big box store.
don't let the salespeople talk you into buying expensive speaker wire. it's a scam.

onkyo receiver and 6 speakers: $289
spend the rest of your $500 on beer for your guests during your first mega house party bash featuring your new system.
