What do you guys charge when you do work for a friend? I rarely do it, but I decided to help a coworker's husband out and now he wants me to let him know what'll all cost. I don't want to sell myself short, but I don't want to tell him too much and not have him give me the work. Any suggestions?

charge normal you wont regret it and you will if you do it cheap. When you do it chep they will ask for more and you'll end up earning like 2 bucks an hour

Point taken...but that said, what do you guys charge for this kinda thing?
I'm mainly a full-time kinda guy...hardly do freelance projects. He sort of sketched out a logo and I made it look good. So that wasn't too rough, probably a total of 3-4 hours.
Now he wants business cards...

I bet 500 will be "too much."

charge him as you would anyone else, unless you're not working the same. otherwise don't do it.
- Need the cash...problem is there is no "anyone else". I don't normally do freelance or per project.CincodeMayo

That's what I'm thinking...especially since he technically supplied the design. I'll actually "design" the business card so I could always charge a bit more for that to make up the difference. Maybe $300 for the logo cleanup/vectorizing?
- Sounds like an easy enough job, $300 including the business card for a decent friend.marchelo

People who play the friend card are looking for something free, even if they are friends. Charge the normal rate and be like "look at it this way. At least you aren't going to a stranger."

What does he do for a living? Charge him for the print and ask him for a favour in future. Or alternatively, charge an exorbitant amount, fight and fall out over it.

figure how much time you think you'll spend on it and give him a quote, don't discount the shit out of your work.

Charge more.
Friend relationships can make being strict with your principles, contracts, billing, etc. very difficult. Bill more coordination time and for the sake of all things not Governor Palin - use a contract!

I made a logo and a business card for a good friend recently who was starting a side business operating a bobcat he bought. I just told him I would need his help when i replace my driveway, or whatever.

You have to ways:
if the job is important/urgent, charge it normally. Discount next time if he brings some clients.Or, if you are already busy with other stuff, charge it bit less, but state clearly since the beginning that his project will have the lowest priority on your workqueue

$500 is the floor for a logo--more if the client is an enemy. never less.

I would urge you not to work for a friend. If you want to be a "friend" then you should help him/her out with the logo at no charge. Let them know that you don't really work on freelance stuff and you are a busy guy so you can't dedicate infinite time to a project. Maybe point them towards someone else.

Don't do it.

I don't normally work for friends, never really, but the work part of the logo is already done. I was actually doing it as a friend, not really expecting money in return. But now he's asking if I can also do a business card, and for me to let him know how much he owes me for all of this.
- ninjasavant0
I generally charge normal rate but only commit to say 85% of what I would do normally and throw in the extra work for free if I want to.
- Gifto0
Sounds like he's not expecting you to do him any favours then if he's asking how much he owes you - have one decent price for logo, a price to design card and mark up the print for the card (if you're handling it) by 50-75%.

is it a chic? pics?

Charge em your hourly rate, plus a PITA factor mark-up (10%-15% sounds good). If in the end, it was smooth and there were no hang-ups getting to the final product, you can remove the PITA charge from your final bill.
