so after looking with envy at my bro's lighting fast machine (PC) and my friend's ultra fast Mac i decided it's time to retire my old machine (PC) and get a new one. So i ask my bro how much a machine like his would cost -- about $600 (plus $100 for him to put it together) when u buy it on newegg.com. U gotta be shiting me, that little for that amount of power? Anyway then out of curiosity i go to apple's website and configure similar desktop and the price tag comes to $3550. WHAT? What am i paying the extra 3k for?
(and don't tell me it's for that pretty new case cause you can get so much ass for the 3k you save that you won't know what to do with)

It's for the pretty new case.
- And tighter OS / hardware integration. And UI and Industrial Design.pylon
- Apple is incredible about making things right if anything should ever fuck up on the machine too.peddy28isgreat
- Totally agreed.pylon
- well my 5 yo PC was tight too so your argument fails here.pr2
- Yea and many pc component makers care just as much about making things right cosair, WD etcMachuse

yeah, the looks.

you're paying the extra for the pretty case and apple name. and OS.
i built a screaming machine from fry's for about $600 as well. 2gb, core 2 duo, etc etc....in a micro shuttle case.
i love the apple OS, but hate the proprietary hardware lock-in. more power to ya if you can run a "hackintosh".
- Intel chipset + EFI hack = $3000 to spend on blow and hookers.rounce

VWs are cars.
Audis are cars.
They've got many of the same parts. If you don't see any value in an audi, buy a VW — it'll get you where you need to go for way cheaper. At the end of the day they're just cars.
Similar with macs. Or any luxury or specialised marque.

Definitely the brand name and the aesthetics. I am in love with most designs by Apple, especially OS X. But if I were to buy a new laptop, I would definitely have to decide if this is more important than saving money. Sometimes it's not worth it, depending on various factors, including your current financial status and what exact programs and tools you need.
I have this argument with people all the time, and I am sure that you can find PCs with the same specs as a Mac, but for around half the price.

if you don't see any value in Apple's design, stop complaining and just get a pc then. it's just that simple.

Agreed Jaline.
Many of us work in or around agencies, who are all macs. I've been working with macs since the early nineties when I started and my first mac was not all that cool — it was BEIGE. MS-based PCs didn't exist as design machines until later on but by then every agency and studio had an investment in the Apple environment.
Of course with their wicked industrial design and cheaper models they're reaching out to a larger more consumer-based market. Why not? More sales equals more money for them.

well putting together anything yourself with parts will be cheaper...the alienware PCs and anything similar are fast as fuck and expensive, probably the same range as any mac. its the brand and attention to detail, realiability, optimized performance etc.
- janne760
pr2, you work in film, right?
- digdre1
here is my opinion on all of this
Because they can.
I see everyone complaining about the prices, but an hour later those guys are in the apple store buying a mac.

Kwesi, i feel your argument was formed in the marketing departments of said corporations because on the $600 machine my bro plays any graphic intensive game at highest settings that Alienware probably charges 3k for machines that are able to handles such intensity. In other words yo pay for the brand, BUT NOT for "realiability, optimized performance" because that comes with any machine.

Has anybody mentioned the great attention to detail on all parts, along with the exceptional quality, no clunky plastic... etc?
- pylon4
Hey listen pr2, nobody's forcing you into anything.
If you want a different machine, then go for it. People who can afford to or want to buy macs, buy macs.
If you want all mac owners so smack their foreheads and say "Holy shit, he's right, I'm ditching my system right now and building one myself!" then you may be disappointed...
- KwesiJ0
i'm not in marketing but i understand what it takes to build a good system ;) did your friend spend all day tweeking the BIOS? there's many factors to make sure each part is working to its full potential within the entire system. that's what you're paying for in part. your freind might know how to build a great system but not just anyone can buy parts, put it together and get crazy efficient performance, that's what high perfomance PC brands do. branding costs sure but so does expertise and system design.

since you brought up the ass issue, I see indeed similarities to prostitution market here. you womanizer you. There are regular street hookers and there are pricey deluxe escorts. Maybe the are degrees of sophistication, but in the end they both will get the job done. So the decision of who to go for is a question of money + taste + maybe what your peer group is into.
