when you are aligning 2 objects, is there a way to keep one of them static (tipically the bigger one, which act as envelope) and, say, center the other one according to the other's position?

I think the 'alignment' tools refer to the stage and document area, respectively. I don't think you can do what you're trying to.

if one is inside the bounds of the other you can use the align panel in flash. Select both items first then go to the align panel. Make sure the "to stage" option is deselected or it will align both to the stage. In the align Panel, select either the second button at the top from the left to align vertically or the fifth button from the left to align them horizontally.

select the two objects, then go to the one you want static, the arrow should change. click once and then align.

not really... i've had the same problem. you can turn off "align to stage/document" but you can't specify which object another is centered to. unless of course you do it dynamically at run-time in flash.
- maybe i'm way off, but in flash i don't think it works the same as AI.

Only way to do it is remember the pos of the object you're trying to align to. Center the two objects. Then group them. Then reposition the group according to the original object. Then ungroup.
Someone should make a JSFL command or panel for this, something like 'Align to Instance'. I've run into it soooo many times myself.

So... seem we should ask for this feature on CS5
