.. between inspiration and plagiarism. Thoughts?
http://shop.tokyocube.com/index.… vs. http://www.apple.com/I should say I not know which of these came first, but I'd guess Apple.
- Jnr_Madison0
Oh come on, yeah they've copied the layout but...pfft.
- OhYeah0
Ish, but then again most things look like Apple these days...
- It's a good composition, I agree .. but isn't this going beyond that?Lillebo
- Well yes, Apple set the trend and so many people copied it. Just look at www.bell.caOhYeah
- thatblokemike0
they have taken the site IA clearly.. but content is different enough and styling changed enough for it to not bother anyone.
I'm sure if you look you'll find a billion sites with a central ad area.. top nav and 4 small spots at the bottom. I have used this homepage IA on sites myself.
- Lillebo0
I agree there is a distinct difference, but at the same time I'm not comfortable with the similarities. It's just too close imo. You say "not bother anyone", well .. I'm bothered by it :)
- The newsfeed is at least pushing it..Lillebo
- then you, my friend, have too much time on your hands.Jnr_Madison
- Someone has to play the design-police..Lillebo

am I missing something here? get a grip, its nowhere near a rip
- Lillebo0
Well, I was asking for opinions, but could you elaborate? I'd really like to know where people think that magic line goes :)
- kelpie0
way way way for off here.
I take it you're a bit of a big Apple fan right? cos if that tokyo site is a rip of Apple despite many many features being different and only really vaguely "mimicking" the general layout, then the Apple site is a rip of literally hundreds of other sites which utilise a similar set up
- kelpie0
you should know also that the cry of "RIP" and claims at being the "design police" have for years turned out to be 90% nonsense on this site. Someone comes up with a thread like this every month or so and they are always pretty mystifying
- I'm not looking to crucify anyone, just interested in hearing opinions on the matter..Lillebo
- Lillebo0
I like to think I'm bi-partisan on this one .. just curious really. I know there are a limited number of successful compositions to build on, and I do like both sites. But still ..
And for the record, "I'm a PC" ..

I thought this thread was about this:
- yep, she looks like a man.Jnr_Madison
- Although there's no way that site has ripped applerupedixon
- Except they both appear in a browser windowrupedixon
- this is fucking hilarious.Jnr_Madison

I don't think there is enough of a similarity to really even say they are that influenced by each other, aside form the layout, which apple doesn't have the monopoly on, they have different navigation systems, one using bread crumbs, one using drop downs, colour scheme is totally different. If people are going to get there knickers in a twist about similar layouts were all in trouble, as there are really only a limited number of layout choices you can make as a web designer that are condusive to a decent user expirence. so in my humble oppinion they sit comfortably on the right side of the line.

Lets not be too hard, I think Lillebo just got a bad batch of gak.
- Lillebo0
Thank you harmsie. I do see your arguments, but I happen to disagree. Their navigation systems are not that far apart in terms of functionality and composition, the pixel details make a minor adjustment to this but not enough. The drop-down is more like an extra, than a feature (and thus not enough visually). The main content area is separated from other frame-elements in the same way, and is marked with very similar sub-headers. The sub-navigation on product-pages are also the same. The feature-content boxes does not need mention. Again -> Newsticker. And the footer is almost identical. Color scheme is not totally different except for a few red dots here and there, which in my opinion is not nearly enough to justify the other similarities.

ha, nice to see one of my sites being discussed :)
well, there's no denying i was inspired by apple, as well as many other well structured websites, for elements of the layout. perhaps the boxes at the bottom, news ticker and layout seperation are too similar, but tbh, i really liked how they'd done it, so saw no crime in learning from that.
the rest of the design is very much in keeping with the tokyocube branding, which has been in existance since way before the new apple site redesign.
anyway, thanks for checking it out! :)
ps: if you want to see the real definition of a 'rip', perhaps take a look at what i find in our referrals the other night.... can't knock'em for dedication, they've managed to take almost every element i built from scratch:
- Dude, I hope you understand I'm not out to crucify anyone. I think you did a good job on that site.Lillebo
- All I wanted was an exchange of opinions over that magic line. I use other people's work for inspiration all the time too :)Lillebo
- no worries dude... you feel free to make comments, it's totally cool. i'll try not to lose any sleep over it ;)tomvining
