fonts and Flash

What a shitty combination. Is it too much to ask that I can be able to import my design from Illustrator without Flash changing the weights of fonts, messing with the leading, and generally fucking things up?

here here! how is it that adobe owns it but it doesn't treat fonts or stroking like everything else adobe? stupid.

why doesnt adobe have a font management program!
- fyoucher10
yeh..worst shit eva. Why is it that you have to click BOLD to get the bold version of the font on a PC and on MAC you're able to get the BOLD version in the menu? MAC - PC font shit never works either, even if you have the same font. What happened to being able to use shortcut keys for special characters, looks like they took out that feature when Flash 6 came out.

What I hate is that is that Flash shows every f*cking font on my system in the drop-box even if only a bunch are activated. SSSSSSLLLLLLLOOOOOWWWWWW.

Feeling the same pain, clicking on my font box can be hazardous to mine and my macs health.

Export your fonts when you publish your swf via the library (linking them dynamically w/a custom name), use html via xml(CDATA tags), create empty textfields dynamically and apply all your settings (including sharpness & thickness) via actionscript.
When exporting your fonts - whatever the linkage label is - call that label in your html... ae: 'face'...
<! [ CDATA [ < font size = " 12 " face = " titleFont " > This is a Title! </font > < font size = " 9" face= "bodyFont" > This is my Lorum Ipsum body copy and I'm going to repeat it a few times. This is my Lorum Ipsum body copy and I'm going to repeat it a few times. This is my Lorum Ipsum body copy and I'm going to repeat it a few times. < / font> ] ] >
GET OFF THE TIMELINE! Flash will love your fonts (for the most part) as long as you be specific w/actionscript.
I highly recommend combining a custom text css object, the textformat object and createTextField() in AS 2 or the like in AS 3 - your font control will be magical and your hate will turn to love. :)

Yes, it's too much to ask. Do it the right way, define a text format, or lay it out by hand :D

outline the text before importing it into flash.
- airey0
or do the text inside flash.

your call.

"lol, the programs are supposed to work in sync...there's no real excuse"...
... I just kind of wanted to reply to that note, ukit -
This is a font issue - you can't blame illustrator and Flash for not handling a third party object such as a font as accurately as you might expect it to work - and also - Flash is output for RGB - Illustrator is for multi-purposes... CMYK / print too... they're not 'made to sync' as you say - Flash has been in adobes family for just a little while now... I'd say it's a 'nice feature' that the adobe people attempted to give us...
... but it wasn't meant to be perfectly streamlined either as the two apps weren't built with each other in mind...
... you'd be better to learn some actionscript and get off the timeline - you'll be that much more valuable to your clients / workplace too!

*sigh*....what I am saying here is that (like a lot of people, I'd guess), I'd like to design stuff in Illustrator and import it into Flash seamlessly. With CS3 they announced that importing AI artwork would be easier and more accurate and it is, which is great, with the exception of fonts nearly always showing up in the wrong weights, leading etc. Now if there is NO WAY they can fix this your point is well taken, but I find that hard to believe.
- turk_1820
did I say 'no way'? :)
let's wait for the next iteration of the software... but until then... eh... your pain is totally felt, man. I only opted to comment on your note as it's not 'perfect' yet... and I'm more or less encouraging you to work your fonts in flash right now and not even 'hope' for them to work in the illy transfer.
Agreed though - Flash is a mad pain in the ass when it comes to handling fonts - whether transferred from one app to the other or handled directly in Flash.
Wasn't hating on you at all! Just pointing out that the apps weren't built with each other in mind - the 'syncing' is more or less weak. :) You annoyance and irritation are totally felt.
:)
And I just realized that I've been typing this under my alter 'super hero' identity!!!
