Its a cycle, so I was wondering if you guys can tell me your experiences, approaches on this topic.. anything would be helpfull. (I know this thread will get lots a bullshits, sorry.)

start with free presonal projects, do anything you want
look for people to work with, a photographer for example....

if you really need something asap, you can automate a gallery in PS, or you can steal a web template and use that for a gallery. it only takes a little knowlwede to edit stuff.
otherwise a PDF with examples is always a simple show case.

#1 - Create some personal projects that show off your style best, or what you are capable of doing.
#2 - Create a portfolio that will show said work (hint: the site itself IS a piece of the portfolio)
#3 - Nobody will ask you to design if they don't know you exist. You have to ASK them.

You don't need client work to start a portfolio, just create what ever pop's in your head and go mad. Once you have a nice collection of work then get a CMS like http://www.indexhibit.org/ and voila!

do some persnal projects, if you cant think of anything, look around and see stuff that needs a rebrand and go for it.posters, postcards, logos, do adverts etc.

A good way to get some work under your belt would be to just do some comp work. Maybe work on creating some brand identities from logo all the way to packaging. Can be anything just make it up....coffee, clothing store....whatever you are passionate about.
Since you don't have any work yet, you could even search for someone seeking design work and go the extra mile to create something just to show them what you are capable of. If they like it, you could land your first small job.
