Got an oppertunity to go on a silverlight trianing course.
Im a front end kind of guy. should i be interested? ive never really done the reasearch with it.

yeah, because even though its from MS, its actually pretty cool

Silverlight is gimmicky at best. If you're front end you're not going to get a whole lot out of it other than probably having the instructor preach to you about silverlight's (alleged) myriad abilities.

i guess its always something new to learn

I guess you gotta weigh the pros of such a course. Are you going to be working extensively on projects that require silverlight? If so it might be worthwhile to have a more fundamental knowledge of the technology to better inform your design.

used here:

Don't you have to know .NET to use Silverlight?

Dead duck.
Save your neurons for something that'll actually matter.

"The international, non-profit European Committee for Interoperable Systems has voiced concerns that with Silverlight Microsoft aims to introduce content on the web that can only be accessed from the Windows platform. They argue that use of XAML in Silverlight is positioned to replace the cross-platform HTML standard. Effectively, if Silverlight usage becomes widespread enough, users will risk having to purchase Microsoft products to access web content.[58]"
yeah it's wikipedia it's got to be unbiased and true.

Is it eatable and delicious?

Seriously don't bother, I worked for a very large design studio once who were becoming close partners with MS (invited to their so called UI research centre to see silverlight and shit) and even we wouldn't touch it with a barge pole when they were offering to pay us to make things with it.
It really is absolute dogshit next to Flash, and the install base is miniscule

Actually you can't compare it with flash, but its a good tool for GUI windows app. Do you guys know all that boring financial app that run on windows? well, with Blend/silveright/WPF designers can now make them more candy and easy to use, actually now designers and c#/.NET developers can work together...

depends on the company and the services they provide.
i'd say, unless you have wicked flash chops, spend your time honing your actionscript skills.

if you have already invested in their blend tools, then yeah, go for it. It's a different work flow than working with illustrator/photoshop to flash.
