really its all about timeline and budget...cutting edge work requires both...(or else a developer with lots of free time)

Normally I have the opposite problem, developers who are so eager to add the latest gizmo even if it has no bearing on the project.

I'm not a developer but I sure am lazy and will happily settle for a solution from 1998.

Ukit...I'd rather have those developers any day because, assuming you have a team of diverse talent with a reasonable strategy, you're at least not tied down by technical limitations. I'd rather reign in a brilliant, ambitious developer than prod some lazy mule.

I'm with monkeyshine about the "technical limitations" bit. A happy medium is preferable at times, but difficult to find.
I've been teaching myself all this stuff for 5 years +, and this is the first year I am doing some formal education for development. It has really helped out. There are so many things I didn't think about before, and new stuff I need to know in order to not become one of those developers who uses inefficient and expired code.
- good for you jaline, web dev. is crazy!studderine
- yup, I know a lot, but there is so much more I have to learn...Jaline
- so much more? Trust me, you will never reach the bottom...powertoni

the developers i worked with where only interested in implementing pre-canned micro.... solutions.
if design view couldn't do it - then 'you can't do that'
i don't miss them
its sad when your designer writes more code than your entire team of developers

I think you really have to take it one project at a time. I have clients that are not willing to pay me the extra time to design tableless layouts and use xhtml/css and the latest cross browser compatible goodness that is perfection. They get tables!
