I use a 3.0 dual quad core mac pro with 8gb ram for print design and retouching... with all the adobe apps the power is never utilised... They only effectively use 1 core when they are processing a task. The only thing that gets this machine going hard is Handbrake, all cores at 95% = fast encode. We only got machines this powerful is because at night they work as a 3d render farm.
Go for the 24 inch as I hear that it displays far more colours than the panel in the 20 inch... and its bigger... (who would have thought?)

We recently bought the new 20-inch/2.66 GHz iMac for my wife — mainly to do print design work. So far we haven't added extra ram and the machine is doing just fine (and is just awesome to look at).

i've mentioned it before but i bought a refurb 24" imac, 2.4Ghz. i bumped up the RAM to 4gb for under $200 (thanks to crucial.com) and it is lightning fast. i only use it for minor web work, concepting and some coding but lately have been messing around with some large format prints and still, it smokes. the colors are amazing and i have absolutely no issues with the thing.
putting in the 4gb of ram was a piece of cake. just lay it down flat, unscrew two screws, pop out the old and place in the new. ah yeah!

What about getting a Mac Mini? Are these any use for print production (and possibly some light video work)?
