Cinema 4D on the mac is good for mograph
3DS Max/Maya for more intense stuff and XSIYou can download trial versions of most and see what you like.

We use 3D Studio, but mostly because of industry standards (arch viz, primarily).
Maya, SoftImage, Houdini are other high end packages.
If you want to be a pro, skip the free/cheap ones and go with industry standards (Cinema = MoGraph, ArchViz and Games = 3D Studio, Film = Maya, SoftImage, Houdini)
