From Adobe:
Save backwards to previous InDesign versionsTo open an InDesign CS3 document in InDesign CS2, you must export the InDesign CS3 document to the InDesign Interchange (INX) format and make sure that the computer running InDesign CS2 is updated with the appropriate plug-ins.
The person running InDesign CS2 can obtain the compatibility plug-ins by choosing Help > Updates and following the prompts. Plug-ins can also be installed from the Adobe website: Choose Support > Updates, and go to the InDesign Downloads page.
Note: Be aware that content created using features specific to InDesign CS3 might be modified or omitted when you open the document in a InDesign CS2.1. Choose File > Export.
2. From the File Type (Windows) or Formats (Mac OS) menu, choose InDesign Interchange.
3. Click Save. You can open the .inx file in InDesign CS2 to convert it to an untitled InDesign document.

I don't think so Kelpie, seems to need to go through the interchange format first or it won't work.

so irritating getting files from other agencies who have upgraded (after waiting ages on them) then you have to mail them and request they resave, prompting a huffy sigh and another 4 hours wait.
why can't other cunts just die??
