yeah, the new ones (expensive ones) allow for special inks. i'm moving office space to share with a digital printer who is setting up a new office. the quality is pretty amazing as well as variable text and images within Indesign including the image styles etc. i'm pretty excited.

Most of the bargain digi-offsets won't allow for custom PMS spots, tho. Unless I'm completely mistaken!

Do you *need* to use a spot? Just convert to CMYK or use a traditional offset press.
Or crayons – depending on quantity and colours, it may still be the fastest/cheapest route.

spot colors are necessary for type, esp. if it is small, and for achieving consistent solid colors. You can do a solid out of process, it's just harder to control and ensure evenness from edge to edge and across the entire print run.
Anything with the name "offset" in it will have the capability to run spot colors. Digital offset is the same thing as plain old offset, except instead of making films they go direct to plate.

Also, there are a lot of Pantone colors that aren't achievable in process.

True gramme, but most digi operators don't want to take the time to change inks, etc, because they tend to be gang-run jobbers.
