Update: need to install codec for quicktime to output AC3 sound... QT mixes down to 2 channel... I can play the 5.1 channel mpegs through vlc and have the macbook pros output 5.1 through the on board optical out. See the following link for more info and links to the codec: http://www.thismuchiknow.co.uk/?…
Haven't tried the codec myself as we ran out of time to go through a thorough testing phase before "going live"

and the answer is yes, you can have 5.1 sound out in keynote... however, by default macbook pros are set to output 2.0 audio through the optical output. Apparently there is a way to set it to output 5.1 which I hopefully have sorted today (this is a system setting, not something inside of keynote).

I might have access to an optical cable today to test it out. It is part of a presentation to demonstrate a home entertainment system, so is super important that it does the job right.
Will post here if I get any definitive results.

I have an mpeg with 5.1 sound that I want to play from a keynote presentation and I was wondering if anyone here knows if keynote can actually play 5.1 sound or if it mixes it down to 2 channels... apple site was much help... google just serves up lots of stuff about Steve's keynotes, good times
