PS lighting tips

i know this is lame and probably easy, but looking for any tips on how to apply a top lighting effect in photoshop...like the below example. everything i have tried looks butty.

its bringing in perspective
and creating depth.you would need to create depth using contrast at the bottom and use shading in elements for make it seem like there is some lighting

you start with some random shades and shape and play with that
start with some abstract shapes and tighten it with the depth you want to create

the firebrand thing has 3 shapes, left to right swoosh deeper and right to left lower and circular area in the middle, you can feather it to make them combine more

that is a good one, using subtle horizon also helps ..
