Don't want to spend more than £400. I'm amateur wanting to learn the ways of the SLR...

Can't say as I know nothing about the 1000D but I have the Nikon D60 and love it. I also have a Canon 30D and I prefer the interface of the Nikon...personal preference though.

altho it is bigger and heavier- wait for D80 prices to drop when D90 hits shelves in october. The D80 is awesome kit and you will get used to using the extras it has over the D60 pretty quickly (mainly the LCD on the top.)
if you go into any camera shop in the UK they won't mention the fact the D60 doesn't have a focus motor in and you will therefore only be able to buy nikon AF-S or sigma HSM lenses thus limiting your selection a bit and costing you more if you want to add to your kit bag.

1000d, is basically a 400d with a new name and some minor upgrades. I'd get the 450d if you can in any way. The 450d has quite a few more semi-pro features you can grow into. Granted the 1000d/400d are great cameras (I love my 400d)
