Brutal honesty on climate by Krugman
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/07/2…"There was a time when Mr. McCain was considered a friend of the environment. Back in 2003 he burnished his maverick image by co-sponsoring legislation that would have created a cap-and-trade system for greenhouse gas emissions. He reaffirmed support for such a system during his presidential campaign, and things might look very different now if he had continued to back climate action once his opponent was in the White House. But he didn’t — and it’s hard to see his switch as anything other than the act of a man willing to sacrifice his principles, and humanity’s future, for the sake of a few years added to his political career."
- why are you so obsess about climate,
DON'T YOU CARE ABOUT THE BEESgeorgesIII - Because "politics of the day" bore the shit out of me. Long-term thinking is much more worthwhile.joeth
- But yeah... the bee situation is not good either.joeth

Well, that's the major failing of our political system as a whole, isn't it. People want to make a career out of politics, so they stand by what will win or save them votes rather than what they think is right, under the auspices of "If i can stay in office, i can do more good".
Hearing story after story of politician after politician, on both sides, hedging their bets because an election is coming up, makes me really think there should be a 2 term limit on all offices. Maybe shit would get done quicker that way as well.

If you make drugs legal then what? Tax it like alcohol.

@locust
Two term limit yes. That way politicians can focus on DOING their job for the people instead of focusing being electable every four years.
- Problem is a re-election in that context makes the victor an instant lame duck...luckyorphan

How many of the Conservative/Republican/Teabagge... posters here are against illegal immigration? please raise hand.
Have you posted something informative/opinionated/inflamat... here in the last 17 months? please raise hand.
Have you called Obama a socialist/america-hater/nazi/ken... etc.? please raise hand.
OK. So considering the FACT that under Obama, "...the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency expects to deport about 400,000 people this fiscal year, nearly 10 percent above the Bush administration’s 2008 total and 25 percent more than were deported in 2007. The pace of company audits has roughly quadrupled since President George W. Bush’s final year in office."**
Would you be willing to discuss how Obama's policies somehow lead to an end point that is exactly what you seek and why this is somehow abhorent to you?
I am curious. I expect crickets.

"The often controversial Minnesota Republican Rep. Michele Bachmann said yesterday that if Republicans will the House in November, "all we should do" is subpoena and investigate the Obama administration.
If Republicans take the House, Bachmann was asked at the GOP Youth Convention in Washington, "how do you feel about the chances for like a little oversight and a little accountability now that the Republicans will have the subpoena power - how aggressive do you think...""Oh, I think that's all we should do," Bachmann said. "I think that all we should do is issue subpoenas and have one hearing after another."

Yup. Can't wait for these fucking retards to get back into power. They'll make it all better by once again doing political freakshows and turn governing & policy making over to the highest corporate bidder while calling it "responsible government".
- Not that the democrats are any better, I mean with all the subpeonas and investigations into Bush...TheBlueOne

Meg Whitman doesn't have anything nice to say about herself, rather she has nothing GOOD to contribute as governor, so she goes and smears Jerry Brown.
Fail. What a waste of money.

ok blue ill bite on the immigrant deal. Firstly can't say i fit any of the groups you would like too respond, but since i figure your a headline jockey i'll give it a shot.
Reading the article the stats are:
2007 = ?
2008 = 369,221
2009 = 387,790
2010 = 227,613 to dateWe know government projected numbers are usually off, but with this continued pace and the new arizona laws, and continued slow economy with fewer general labor jobs i could see the number happening. But keep in mind its purely a speculation.
Work site raids are down from 5100 to 765 deportations. However they have raised 6.4 million in revenue by targeting employers. So thats less deportation but more money. Can pretty much speculate on that being either good or bad. Bad would mean there is far more immigrants taking advantage of tax payer services. And that number would compromise the real value of the 6.4 million dollars earned. But who knows maybe it costs less money to tax employers then it does to deport them while trying to discourage hiring illegal immigrants. Don't really have enough info to decide.
The article doesn't really focus on the agendas planned that lend to the numbers. I can't tell who to really give credence to for the numbers. Were these laws the same in place in the days of bush, or is it state laws like arizona. Or even laws before bush. Or is it economical. All i can really tell is numbers look projected to be pretty close as last year, with maybe a +/- difference of 10,000-20,000. And those numbers on a national general scale, without specific demographics locations and more info make me think "eh whatever, nothing really to be learned here."
So now I have to ask myself why is this speculation news, especially when its so general. And all i can think of is this is just a political fluff piece. The piece is in support of obama stating the numbers are on track to be slightly more then bush, giving credit without stating to what policies the credit is due, why and how these policies are more effective then others. And i guess there must be a lot of party talk about immigration and this is just a voice supporting their team side. So yea not really news worthy.
What would i like to see with immigration policy. I don't know. I don't care much about it, and don't know enough policy on federal or state levels. I would suggest something like let them work for what they will, charge them taxes. On social programs like healthcare make it less socialized. So if you need care you (not everyone) pays for it. And this would go for americans too, then its all equal. And for illegals that dont want to play that way, we just shoot them in the face. Prison is more humane but we are already a prison state and deporting doesnt seem to hit home, so raise the bar.
But americans what to have their cake and eat it too. So if leveling the playing field by limiting government social services probably wont fly amongst people, theyll jsut bitch and moan about it being unfair. But truth is that would simply mean we have to be responsible for ourselves and accept natural reality, and need to accept the things we cant control. We would need to accept competition and survival of the fittest on a economic mutually beneficial economic platform. All we believe in is subsidization, bitching and moaning. We are happy when others feed us, and complain when we have to feed others. And try hard to ignore that one or the other is the just a different side of the same coin. Take care of those deeply instilled beliefs (fdr economic bill of rights stuff) and solving immigration problems like this will likely solve themselves for the better part.
