I know every printer differs but I'm trying to work out a few things. Does anyone have / know of a guide that has cost per side of A4 / similar if US for inkjet / digital / xerox printing? We have a canon all in one inkjet and for small runs I'm wondering whether it's cheaper than the copy shop...Doubt it but don't think there's much in it.

'all in one' worries me - if it's one of hose multi-colour cartridges then, no, it's probably not too competitive.
Rule of thumb is - more you spend on printer, less you spend on prints. A lot depends on your run-size. I know that for short (<250, say) runs, it's generally cheaper/easier/better to do in-house. For me, anyway. It allows for changes mid-way, personalisation, proofing - not having to go outside...
