...do you guys interpret wireframes in terms of visual design?

not literal at all. wireframes are meant for generalizing locations, not dictating design. We actually refer to them as mechanicals so as to not confuse clients.

when operating in an IA/UX capacity, i expect them to dictate placement and general size of objects.

yea they're def just a loose guide, u have to force yourself to take them lightly, where I'm working they encourage designers to suggest alternate ways of achieving the same results of a particular page/module structure or interface
