Have you ever left a job 'interview' feeling not only like the scum of the world but like your design skills should be put to use cleaning toilets? How do art directors have such power? I think I need a pep talk

Maybe the CD just had a bad day and needed to piss on someone to irrigate his ego.
do you shake salad?

they don't. It's all about how you handle yourself. Don't let them thin you're weak or a novice. Be straight forward, listen, if you think they are right or they make sense, absorb it and apply it in the future, if they are just talking crap or talking about how great they are, ignore them and walk away....
But never, NEVER!! take it personally...

They hurt you at home and they hit you at school,
They hate you if you're clever and they despise a fool,
Till you're so fucking crazy you can't follow their rules,
A working class hero is something to be,

If someone is an idiot and has horrible taste, should the fact that they don't like your work bother you? No, it should make you feel good. There are people who like Britney Spears and DMB too you know.

I'm guessing that you respect this guy's work, at least to some extent... Just try to get back to where you were before the interview, remind yourself of why you were confident of your work in the first place and next time just don't let it get to you. Or, if you feel that there's something to what he's saying use it to drive you in the future. I love harsh critique because once I'm totally wrecked emotionally, I've got nothing left but a challenge to get better. Good luck, would love to see your portfolio.
