Sorry... I'm new to this. I am looking to animate a main picture in a website im working on. All it will do is transition from a picture to another picture through fading in and out. Is a gif the way to go? Any good tutorial's out there?

Depends - if the image is photographic or complex in nature, then no, GIFs are the wrong way to go.
Doing a 'simple' timeline alpha fade in and out in Flash is probably your best bet.

it is photographic in nature so i guess gifs are out of the question and i will have to learn flash

this isn't bad not that smooth though and mine will be a lot bigger
