Well done Jaline, I'm amazed. I mean, most guys around would rather swap the whole computer than a part of it because they have no idea it's something they can do themselves!
I was wondering, how much RAM do you have? Upgrading this bit could make it fly.
- 2 GB. I could upgrade to 3GB, but I'm not sure it would be that different for what I do right now.
http://eshop.macsale…Jaline - By the way, you're a genius with this stuff. Thanks again :)Jaline
- Genious? All secret knowledge there is in a hd swap web video and latest hd pricelist ;)rafalski
- BTW I went from 2 to 4GB recently and the difference is very noticeable.rafalski
- On a regular Macbook?! Hmm...maybe I will try it out.Jaline
- I stand by my genius comment. A genius hockey player :PJaline

I put in a new 250GB HD in my Macbook and the files are being restored now. I bought a Seagate Momentus 5400 because I'm terrified of my laptop being more hot or working harder than it already does. It was at a decent price. I will buy more external drives later :)
It's not that difficult at all to replace the HD. I was only worried about static, but, so far, so good. Also, the Macbook I had used the same HD, but with 120GB instead (Seagate and everything).
Thanks for the help, everyone.

Just be glad you don't have a 12" Powerbook with an 80gig drive. That suckers dinky.

i replaced the 5400 in my macbook pro 15" with a 7200 rpm. it involves massive disassembly of the unit. not for the faint of heart, or shaky of hand.

Next thing Jaline will be asking us how to set up a hidden/encrypted folder for her kinky movie collection..
She knows it's the place to ask.

vw, a lot of them will be video files. That's what takes up all the space on my computer right now. So it's more worth it to get the larger drives.

what kind of files are filling up your hd? if it's small files, why not get a bunch of flash drives? so it's still portable. 4 GB flash drives are so cheap, that's all i do with my macbook.

We'll see a lot of these on www.wherewedowhatwedo.com next to people's macbooks: http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/…

An external 2.5" drive (like WD Passport) is nothing but a laptop drive in an enclosure. It is just convenient to get an enclosure and the drive separately, because you don't lose your warranty when swapping drives. I don't think they let you open the Passport.
I have a few 2.5" drives, but the setting that works best for me is to put the biggest drive into the laptop and backup things on the remaining ones which sit in their enclosures (ie. one for music, one for photos, work).
It depends. Some people just want to buy a defined product rather than fiddle with it. My friends are happy with their WD passports, you might be too.
Anyway, you don't need to worry about the external drive speed, because USB 2.0 and Firewire 400 13" ports MacBook has are slow bottlenecks anyway. Only get a fast 7200 drive if you mean to put it inside the computer, you're not going to see any difference unless you go for a Firewire 800 enclosure and get a MacBook Pro which has such port.

My Macbook is a year old. I'm thinking maybe I should get another external HD because of the chance that it will last longer than my Macbook, but that means I will have to keep a lot of my stuff on the external. I hate having to remove the plugs/wires when carrying it around. So it's basically: convenience vs. lifespan / long-term life at this point. Either way, if I can find something fast, that would be a plus.

*** don't invest more money into your laptop, buy an additional external... much smarter investment in the long run.

I'd get an external - the passports are a sweet small external harddrive that hold up to 350gb right now - I love mine. Plus it helps when I don't want to lug my laptop to a job site and need some stock from my drive.

Jaline that's the one I have (your link)

..but drives come in bigger capacities today, even 320's can be reasonably priced.I'd get either a Seagate or Hitachi, the bigger the better. They both have good 7200rpm models (5400 too). 8MB cache is standard, 16 would be faster.
What people say of 5400 vs. 7200rpm speed difference:

I use free Carbon Copy Cloner instead of paid Super Duper!:
http://www.bombich.com/software/… - be careful using this, double check which drive you are copying from and to :)
It might take 2-3 hours to clone your 120GB drive.Don't forget you need an enclosure for the old drive, you won't be able to clone your original drive contents otherwise.
This looks like a nice package, unless you find the transparent case tacky:

- I can just transfer everything to an external HD I already have instead of using the internal HD I will be taking out, right?Jaline
- On a mac, you can even boot from the external, just press Option while booting and choose which disk to start with.rafalski
- yes, you can clone the whole disk contents with Carbon Copy Cloner, just don't use the computer while cloningrafalski

I'd just buy a portable firewire external and keep your existing disk clean with regular backups – in my mind macbooks aren't worth upgrading unless from day one, rather save the money for a new(er) one... refurbs are usually the best way to save. I saved around £350 ($700) by buying a refurb MBP and have never had a problem with it, other than the battery this week. Thats after 20 months... I just bought a new battery and will wait til the next release hopefully soon.
I would just back up and clean install.

changing the HD on ANY macbook or macbook pro will void the warranty for the machine. i asked this question in an apple store in the UK last week and got that answer, so unless you're out of warranty i wouldn't do it!
- autoflavour0
only bother updating internal if your are planning on going from 5400 to 7200rpm
- Jaline0
Would this one work?
http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/pr…(I'll ask around in the store(s) too)
- Or I may try acescence's suggestion instead.Jaline
- It's hard to get a 2.5" with higher specs, but I'm looking around. I know Samsung may have some available.Jaline
- Actually, these two look good as well:

http://eshop.macsale…Jaline - Yes the seagate is the one I have, with shock protection. Comes in larger size nowadays.rafalski
