They are useful at times, you could try Object > Crop Area > Release

i just mean like if you've masked a few things, it still allows you to select something hidden in the mask. and also its becomes very difficult to try and align a bunch of masked objects. its easier in CS3 but it doesn't work all the time. in freehand or indesign they get masked into a shape and you can just move the shape around without worrying about whats hidden. it seems like a really simple thing they should get right.

freehand is a bit of a turd but it got some of the basics right
