Ever since the switch to GS there has been a raft of complaints and they have become less and less popular.
I never switched and am still on SS. I have had very little issues and they are still the cheapest host with the NT deal for life.
Godaddy is shite

Bluehost is good for me.

I have about 65 sites hosted on Mediatemple.
It would cost us so much time and money to move it all over to another host.

I am with the worse host in living memory but too lazy to do fuck all about it.

I used MT's shared hosting for a long time, before they switched to their grid service. I agree with most people's experience here that the grid service is very flakey and slow. I've since upgraded to their Dedicated Virtual hosting plan, and I've noticed a serious improvement in performance and reliability. It's not for everyone, and it does cost more, but it is better than their GS. And Mallmus, you do have to migrate everything yourself.

:( anybody know why Media Temple is down this time?
- Mallmus0
They seem to be down at least once every day now :(
- TheBlueOne0
Not down for me..
- Totally depends on which grid boxes you're on and/or if you've got dedicated virtual or fully dedicated, etc.pylon

I think they call it Cluserfuck 2?

MediaTemple of DOOM!!!

I say this all the time and I'll say it again:
Grid Service is probably just some hype terminology that in reality isn't anything different in a technical sense than any other large-scale web host out there. Please think about it: Is one guy on the block really going to have something totally different than anyone else in that industry? No. They're all going to do what is a best-practice and works best for their clients. I'd bet that there are tons of other hosting environments doing the exact same thing, they're just not putting out neat terminology and whatnot about what it is that makes their sites and their hosting environment work.
I have nothing personally against MediaTemple, never used then and also never considered them, but time and time again when they come up around here I can't help but remind any of you that use them that you are paying an insane amount of $$ per month for something you probably utilize 10% capability of in comparison to dozens and dozens of equally reputable, cheaper hosts out there.

mg33, i think the issue is that their grid service IS something different than what everyone else i doing and they are having issues getting it working reliably, as evidenced by the fact that my dv is rock solid and never goes down, my old ss server is rock solid and never goes down, but my grid account is always down. if it was just like everything else i doubt it would be so unreliable.

It is a clustered system. This means the MySQL db is not on the same machine as the apache web server. They host web sites on one set of boxes and all of the mySQL for those web sites on another set of boxes.
Others are doing it. http://www.servage.net/
Cheaper for them, It makes for a slower db connection.
