are these common in large project contracts? i know a lot of illustrators and the like will employ them, but it seems like larger projects would be more itemized. for example, we completed one round of a $60k project, so that's $20k of the project. Any input?

We have it in every single project contract, doesn't matter the size.

$60K project is one hell of an example!
hope some solid contracts and payment terms are in order :)

Like tparsons said, no matter what size..

how does one figure in a kill fee?

From what I understand, if the project is already in the works, you should be getting 50%. If it's basically done but the client kills it at the last minute, its 100%, but you keep everything regardless. That's at least how I understand it. Never had to kill a project, so, well, I could be wrong...

^ that is truly only a practice in a freelancing situation; accounts through an agency rarely work on 50/50 terms. kill fees are a very good friend to have.
- Gotcha. Glad to know I wasn't completely off base...skwiotsmith
