With minimal php / mysql /server skillz you can set-up an open source one.

i guess we purchased a merchant starter through yahoo, but the damn thing is a mess. i don't want to use their templates (obviously) and i have designed the whole thing, but i have no idea to make it work so that the forms translate to the cart. f this.

wow good luk using that yahoo POS. Good luck I mean if you don't want it to look like every other yahoo shopping site out there.

this one is really easy and simply to add. it's not the pro level stuff you'll see with many others but awesome for designers. also, zencart can bite my nether regions. if the unusability experts at microsoft didn't build that in their spare time i'll be amazed.
another option is to use psd2html.com as a developer. they offer a few services along this line.

Like airey said, FoxyCart will let you build the site how you want and _add_ ecommerce to it. Different approach. If you have any questions please let us know.
(And thanks to everybody that suggested FoxyCart. Your votes of confidence are super appreciated.)
