I suppose everyone is familiar with the story of Amsterdam's freebike incentive?

Yup, it's a great idea.

i'd love to see someone steal my bike not knowing that it completely jams up when you try to use the top gear.

dont feel soo bad.. I lived in nyc for 12 years. during that time i had 4 bikes stolen... Moved to miami and had another stolen. I am not living in california. i have 2 locks. If someone wants your bike there is really no stopping. i just make it so its a hassle for them..... in ny they really do not care. they took down a small tree to take my bike.

I know that's fucking worthless for you now but somebody's got to say it:
What were you thinking? Leaving a shiny expensive bike outside like that?! Do you live in Norway in the 70's, before they got locks on their doors?
That said, I'm sorry to hear that canuck.

still drowning my sorrows but this made me chuckle

i don't care how many locks you use...parking a 1200 bike on the street is a gamble.

Dude if it makes you feel any better I stole a bike from someones office today. I'll sell it to ya for 1,500.

Yes I have to agree. Whats sad, I remember a very drunken conversation with my sister years ago where she told me that the worst thing in the world was other people. Although I fully agreed with her the thought of it made me very very sad, that she had come to this conclusion and she wasn't an unhappy or depressed person.
She now has a 3 week old daughter now so Im sure she has reappraised the situation...
- Now she'll say, "the best and worst things in the world are people".Jaline

My bike got stolen off the front porch when I was 6, it was the first one without training wheels and was a Raleigh BMX thing (parents thought it was a good size). The bastard rode it to school the next day, but me being the nice guy that I was decided not to mention it because I figured there's a decent chance he bought the same bike (and he was 12 and would beat the shit out of me if I bothered him most likely). Later I was told by a friend they heard him bragging about stealing it, he 'graduated' from 8th grade and I never saw him (or my bike) again.
Moral of the story: next time you see someone with a remotely similar bike, don't hesitate to beat them to a pulp and take the bike.
Actually, I have no real advice. But that really sucks, and since you're in a big city I guess there aren't really any practical ways of getting it back.

Had it happen to my bike back in 1999. MArin Eldridge. It was chained up in my flat hallway, but not to anything. The bastards must've bee clocking it for weeks. They burst the door down (which I heard and thought was the neighbours) and ran off down the street with it. It had a shitty chain lock on it as it was inside but instead of buying or borrowing a pair of cheap bolt cutters, they used a brick to smash the rear stays off the bike to steal the wheels. I got back a mangled frame and cranks. The rest was gone.

Best of all the little cunts were both 13 so the police let them go. Wish I'd have known, I would've made a trip round their house with a kettle and a bag of salt 'n' vinegar crisps.

Some fuckhead broke into our home a couple of years back...cleaned us out, then lay a turd in one of our frying pans and put it on the stove and lit the burner...he then proceeded to knock off every single record and CD in my collection, but left "Listen LikeThieves" by INXS on my ironing board...

you should buy a jetpack now..screw bikes.

i had someone go into my car (yeah, i'm a tool, it was unlocked) and snatch my backpack. i walked out to my car one morning and see one of my sneakers laying in the road. i walk out to get it and see the other down the road a bit. Then i realize where they had been (my backpack). Nothing valuable was taken, but a couple pics from my childhood (one as a boy scout and one of me breakdancing)
